Biden plans $1bn in arms shipment to Israel

The White House has informed Congress of its plans to send over $1 billion (£800 million) in a new arms shipment to Israel. This comes after the US government’s opposition to a full-scale invasion from the Israeli military on the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Last week a shipment of bombs to Israel was paused over concerns that civilians could be killed if they are used in areas with a large population density.

Congress can block the shipment if a majority in both chambers is opposed to it. The package, US media and in particular the Associated Press, confirmed, includes $700 million in tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles, and $60 million in mortar rounds.

The Whtie House notification is one part of the process that federal law mandates if a US arms sale is made to a foreign nation above a set amount. Congress recently approved a package of aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.

Israeli tanks advanced deep into residential areas in the south-east of Rafah. They are thought to be around one mile from the centre.

Medical services however are in short supply. Doctors Without Borders told the BBC that they had stopped operating in one of the field hospitals in the area over concerns about safety.
