Bladeless Swiss Army knives coming soon

Victorinox has been making Swiss Army knives since the late 1800s in a range of different models. They can be equipped with anything from a saw to a seatbelt cutter but so far, there has never been a version without a knife. That is until now. The pocket knives have been a staple of the company but due to pressure from a rise in knife violence around the world, the company has announced a bladeless version of its iconic tool.

“We’re concerned about the increasing regulation of knives due to the violence in the world,” said Carl Elsener, in an interview with The Guardian. Elsner is the fourth-generation CEO of the company, which is still a family-run business. “In some markets, the blade creates an image of a weapon. I have in mind creating a tool that would be useful for cyclists. Cyclists have a need for specific tools but not necessarily a blade. We already have a tool specifically for golfers.”

Elsner’s concerns are not unfounded either. The UN Global Study on Homicide 2023 found that nearly a third of all homicides in Europe that year used some sort of sharp object. In addition, the company told The Guardian that it is also responding to regulations in certain places such as venues and events including sports games or other outdoor activities.

And that’s not to mention airport security where the Swiss Army knives are often thrown into the confiscation bin. This would allow anyone to travel with the handy and beloved tool anywhere in the world with a peace of mind.

Of course, it needs to be emphasised that this is simply an additional model being added to the lineup. Models with a knife will still be available and there are other types of multitool are also available. Only time will tell how this new version will do in the market.
