Double world records set on Everest

Mount Everest has seen two record-breaking climbs on Sunday as a Nepali sherpa marked the most ever summits while a British climber set the record for a foreigner. Kami Rita Sherpa, 54, climbed the tallest mountain in the world for a 29th time while Brit, Kenton Cool, did so for the 18th time.

Sherpa was already the world-record holder and broke his own landmark, setting a new benchmark in the process. A guide for over two decades, his first summit was in 1994 and he has made the climb nearly every year since then. The climbing season has just gotten underway for Mount Everest as hundreds of climbers are expected to travel and make the trek in the coming weeks.

Sherpa scaled the 8,849m or 29,000ft summit on Sunday, 12th May, at 07:30 local time (01:45GMT). A week earlier he posted to Instagram from the base camp saying that he was back to attempt a 29th summit “to the top of the world,” adding that “one man’s job, another man/woman’s dream.”

He had previously told media about how his climbs are just his job but he made the journey twice last year. In doing so, he took back his crown from long-time rival and compatriot Passang Dawa Sherpa.

Meanwhile, Kenton Cool from Gloucestershire also made the summit on Sunday. The British man is also a mountaineering guide and had in the past played down his accomplishments. “So many of the Sherpas have so many more ascents,” he told AFP in 2022.

Lhakpa Sherpa holds the record for women, crowd-funding her record-breaking 10th climb in 2022.

The Nepali government has issued around 400 mountaineering permits to climbers this year for the season which runs between April and June. Nearly all climbers will be joined by local guide, doubling the number expected to make the trip. Last year saw more than 600 people but also among the deadliest seasons with 18 deaths reported on the mountain.
