Multi-award-winning Emma Rice returns to Battersea Arts Centre with a fearless reimagining of the classic French tale, Blue Beard. Get ready for a wildly inventive musical feast, as this exhilarating story of vengeance and sisterhood unfolds in our Grand Hall.

Blue Beard the Magician meets his match when his young bride discovers his murderous secret. She summons all her rage, all her smarts and all her sisters to bring the curtain down on his tyrannous reign. This is a classic French folktale that has captivated audiences for centuries with its blend of suspense, mystery, and moral lessons. The tale follows the story of a wealthy nobleman with a blue beard who marries several young women, only for them to mysteriously vanish.

When his latest bride discovers the forbidden chamber in his castle containing the bodies of his previous wives, she must outwit Blue Beard to escape his deadly grasp. This timeless narrative explores themes of curiosity, trust, and the consequences of disobeying warnings. In its theatrical adaptation, Blue Beard brings the tale to life on stage, immersing audiences in its dark and compelling world, where bravery and cunning are essential for survival.

One of the UK’s most influential artists of the last 50 years, Emma Rice (Brief Encounter, The Red Shoes, Wuthering Heights, Tristan & Yseult) brings her brand of theatrical wonder to create a rousing story for our times.

Blue Beard is on show until, 18th May.
