Ferrari unveiled 12Cilindri

Ferrari has taken the wraps of its latest offering, the 12Cilindri. Named for the 6.5-litre 12 cylinder engine, the new car harks back to some of the most iconic grand tourers by the “prancing horse” particularly the Daytona.

The new car makes use of the latest version of the iconic naturally-aspirated V12 seen in some of its fastest supercars in recent years. It makes over 800bhp. While that’s short of Lamborghini’s Revuelto, the “raging bull” utilises hybrid power to get it over 1000bhp, while the Ferrari does it the old-fashioned way.

For the very first time on a naturally-aspirated engine, an innovative software strategy was developed that can modify the maximum torque available as a function of the gear selected. This, Ferrari says, gives the driver the feeling of smooth, progressive pick-up as the transmission ratio increases, another vital factor in making the driving exhilaration delivered by the Ferrari 12Cilindri truly unique.

Unusually for a Ferrari, both coupe or Berlinetta, and convertible or spider models are both unveiled together, rather than the drop-top being revealed at a later date.

Whenever there’s a new V12, pundits and analysts say that it could be one of the last. And while Aston Martin has recently announced one its own, this could really be among the last as electrification starts to take over industry. That would make this a truly iconic car and one that collectors will no doubt want to hold on to.
