Former Brazil president Bolsonaro indicted

Brazil’s Federal Police have indicted former president Jair Bolsonaro for money laundering and criminal association. This is in connection with undeclared diamonds that the controversial far-right leader received from Saudi Arabia while in office.

That came from a source with knowledge of the accusations. A second source has confirmed the indictment, though not for what specific crimes. Both officials spoke under condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak publicly.

The Brazilian Supreme Court has not yet received the police report with the indictment. Once it does, Brazil’s prosecutor general Paulo Gonet will analyse the documents and make a decision about whether nor to bring charges and force the far-right leader to stand trial.

This is the second indictment brought against Bolsonaro since he left office. The first was in May over allegedly falsifying his Covid-19 vaccination certificate. However, this indictment dramatically raised the legal threat that the divisive figure is facing, something which his opponents hail while his supporters denounce as political persecution.

Bolsonaro did not immediately comment but both he and his lawyers have previously denied any wrongdoing with both cases as well as other investigations into the former president. One will probe a possible involvement in inciting an uprising in the capital on 8th January, 2023, that was hoping to remove his successor from power.

In 2023, Federal Police accused Bolsonaro of attempting to sneak in diamond jewellery worth as much as $3 million and selling two luxury watches. Police said in August 2023 that he had received cash from the nearly $70,000 sale of the watches which he had received as gifts from Saudi Arabia. Brazilian law requires its citizens arriving by plane from abroad to declare goods worth over $1,000 and for any amount above that exemption to pay tax equal to half of its value.
