France Football star Kylian Mbappé calls on youth vote

Football star Kylian Mbappé has been at the centre of France’s political turmoil ahead of their opening game at Euro 2024. Speaking of the tumultuous events in his home country, he described it as a pivotal moment in French history.

Aside from answering the usual questions about the challenge Austria could pose to the 2018 World Cup champions in their clash in Dusseldorf, the former PSG star said that the situation in his country “was dire.”

“This is a never-seen-before event,” Mbappé said. “And that is why I want to talk to the whole of the French people, but also the youth. We are a generation that can make a difference. We see the extremes are knocking on the door of power and we have the opportunity to shape our country’s future.”

On Saturday, 15th June, France’s football federation called for the national team, Les Bleus, to be respected and for the squad not to be politicised after the shock call for an snap parliamentary election from president Emmanuel Macron earlier this month. This came after he was beaten in the EU vote by the far-right party of Marine Le Pen.

The move put the nation into political uncertainty, stirring financial markets, with his gamble potentially offering the far-right and Le Pen a chance at more political power. This could see Macron’s presidency weakened with three years left on his term. Opinion poll predicted that the far-right National Rally (RN) could top the vote for the very first time but it may still fall short of an absolute majority to govern alone.

Despite rejecting pressure or political use of Les Blues, the French football federation did say that the players were all free to express any of their views.
