Hidden American gems to visit in the winter

Most of us visit either California, New York or Florida, the latter especially this time of year. But the US has plenty of hidden gems to explore. Here are a few you might want to try over the winter break.

Montana is known for its skiing but Big Sky is a hidden gem with a touch of sophistication. The charming town offers a vibrant après-ski scene, cozy lodges, and a variety of restaurants and shops. Take advantage of the exceptional skiing at Big Sky Resort or explore the surrounding wilderness on snowshoeing or cross-country skiing trails. Montana is also home to some of America’s best national parks and, as the new Jurassic Park game was announced, some of the most abundant fossil beds in the world, with many creatures on display in its museums.

Roswell might be one of the first places we think of when we think of New Mexico. Today, it has become a popular sight for those wanting a little mystery but there is so much more to the state than that. The unique culture and charm of Taos is worth exploring. Experience the vibrant art scene, explore the historic adobe buildings, and enjoy the cozy ambiance of this charming town. Go hiking or snowshoeing in the surrounding mountains, or take a sleigh ride through the snow-covered landscape.

And finally, in Arkansas there’s something you won’t find anywhere else. The Crater Diamonds State Park allows you to go digging for diamonds. Since its discovery in 1906, more than 75,000 diamonds have been unearthed there. You might just strike it rich! And with any southern state, the unique culture, cuisine, and music, this is Johnny Cash’s home state, is worth a visit.

The next time you visit the land of the free, don’t restrict yourself to the big and famous cities. Every state has something to offer.
