Leverkusen hopes to stay “invincible”

German side, Bayer Leverkusen, continues to make history. Xabi Alonso’s side won the Bundesliga, ending the dominance of Bayern Munich and winning the trophy for the first time in their history. What’s more, they have done it without losing a single game all season, something that few teams have ever achieved in the past. Some fans may remember Arsenal’s invincibles season in the 2003-04 season.

However, the German side has gone a step further. First of all, they have a run of 48 game without a single loss, and second, they have done so across all competitions. This is a record for any team in Europe’s top five leagues, the Bundesliga, Premier League, Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A. The team is now just one game away from its first European final in over two decades.

If they keep this up for just five games, Leverkusen will have achieved an invincible treble, something that will no doubt be one of the greatest achievements in football history.

With the league title well and truly in their hands, all that’s left are the German Cup and the Europa league.

“We want to stay unbeaten and we know every week it gets tougher,” manager Xabi Alonso. “Everyone wants to beat us.”

Leverkusen hosts Roma for the second leg of the Europa League semi-final. They won the first leg 2-0 in Italy last week and are in prime position to get to the final and lift a European trophy for the first time in 36 years.
