New cycle lanes move a step closer in RBKC

A consultation running from 15 May 2023 to 26 June 2023 found that that 66 per cent support or partly support new cycle lanes on Kensington High Street. On Fulham Road, around 71 per cent supported or partially supported the measures.

The designs are painted, dashed “with traffic flow” white lines without any physical infrastructure. A decision has been proposed to introduce the lanes with an amendment to extend the width to two metres, wherever this is possible, on the recommendation of road safety auditors.

Cllr Cem Kemahli, lead member for planning, place and environment, said:

It’s heartening to see that people are open to the idea of some cycling infrastructure on our streets and this scheme strikes the right balance between keeping our major through roads moving while allowing space for everyone.

Road safety auditors made some suggestions to make the scheme safer and discourage close passes. I’m happy to have accepted these, as making our roads safer as well as greener is a priority for us.

The decision is now subject to a 10-day standstill period. After which the Council can implement the measures. If confirmed, work will take place on Kensington High Street this summer and Fulham Road later in the year. The decision report is available in full on the Council’s website.
