New Ravenscourt Park glasshouse opens as ‘green’ community centre

A new community glasshouse has been unveiled in Ravenscourt Park as a result of redevelopment work that was financially supported by H&F Council.

Hammersmith’s light and airy new glasshouse is destined to become a community hub with gardening, wreath-making, yoga, and volunteer work among the planned activities.

The glasshouse is the result of years of preparation and a £112,000 fundraising campaign by the environmental charity Hammersmith Community Gardens Association (HCGA).

It has been a long-term goal of HCGA to replace the outdated glasshouse from the 1960s with the new green hub ever since the company began operations at the Ravenscourt Park site in 2004 and managed three additional community gardens in the borough.

Community gardener Myra Heller made a beautiful mosaic as part of the design that features images of trees, flowers, and wildlife like birds, butterflies, and bees.

The mosaic, which is prominently displayed on the stone floor of the glasshouse, serves as a vibrant reminder of the negative environmental effects of community planting and growing activities.

The Mayor’s Fund, neighbourhood businesses, and private donors provided additional funding for the new glasshouse to ensure its completion.

The glasshouse project got started in 2021 but was put on hold because of the pandemic. The structure’s foundations were laid at the beginning of 2022, and over the following year, additional work was done to develop it and put in the glass panels.

On 10th and 11th June, the glasshouse will be open to the public as part of the London Open Gardens weekend, along with eight other gardens in the borough, ranging from Emery Walker’s House in Hammersmith Terrace to Fulham Palace Meadows Allotments.
