NFL star causes controversy with speech

An NFL star has caused controversy after he told graduates that one of a woman’s most important roles in life would be to become a “homemaker.” Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker also came under fire after he criticised abortion and LGBT pride in the speech at Benedictine College in Kansas. His team has not reacted to the comments and the NFL has described it as a “personal” matter.

Nearly 160,000 people called for the sacking of the three-time Super Bowl winner. In the 20-minute speech, he said to female graduates at the Catholic private college that they were told “the most diabolical lies.”

“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world,” he said. “But I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

His wife’s life had “truly started” when “she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother,” adding that she embraced “one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”

His speech also attacked IVF and surrogacy, as well as what he called “degenerate cultural values,” “dangerous gender ideologies,” and the “tyranny of diversity, equity and inclusion.”

“Our nation is led by a man who publicly and proudly proclaims his Catholic faith, but… has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies,” he said, referencing President Joe Biden.

The American football league distanced itself from the comments, saying that they were said “in his personal capacity” and that “his views are not those of the NFL.” LGBT advocacy group GLAAD called the speech “woefully out of step with Americans.”
