OJ Simpson dies at 76

OJ Simpson, the former American football player, actor, and suspected double murderer has died of cancer aged 76. The publicity surrounding his 1995 trial for the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman was one of the 20th century’s most watched TV events, including the infamous police chase in his white Ford Bronco.

Simpson’s death was announced on X, formerly Twitter, via a message from the athlete’s family:  “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”

From the low-speed car chase in his Bronco through Los Angeles, to the televised and highly polarising trial that captured the attention of millions in the US and around the world, the events saw a blending of celebrity and crime and have become iconic ever since.

The trial lasted nearly a year, bringing many characters to prominence. Among them were judge Lance Ito, attorneys Johnnie Cochrane and Robert Kardashian, and Simpson “house guest” Kato Kaelin. It gave one of the most famous “gotcha” moments in the history of criminal trials when Simpson failed to wear a glove that was alleged by the prosecution to have been worn during the stabbings. Cochran famously tod the jury “if it doesn’t fit, you must acquit,” a line that has been quoted and parodied many times since.
