President’s son Hunter Biden convicted in felony gun trial

Hunter Biden, the son of American President Joe Biden, has been convicted of all three felony charges related to the purchase of a gun in 2018. Prosecutors argued that he had lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form by claiming that he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs.

The 54 year old stared straight ahead and did not show much emotion when the verdict was read. Jury deliberations lasted just three hours over the two day trial in Wilmington, Delaware. He hugged his lawyers before leaving the courtroom with Melissa, his wife.

The President said in a statement shortly after the verdict that he would accept the outcome, adding that he would “continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal.”

Jurors found Hunter Biden guilty of lying to a federally licensed gun dealer. He falsely claimed on his application that he was not a drug dealer and illegally had the gun for 11 days. His ex-wife as well as a former girlfriend were among the key witnesses who testified about finding his crack pipes as well as additional drug paraphernalia.

A date for sentencing has not been set but he could face up to 25 years in prison. Because he is a first-time offender however, it is unlikely that he would face the maximum. It is not yet clear whether he will be sentenced to any time in prison for the crime.

Now, Hunter Biden, like former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump, Joe Biden’s main political rival in the upcoming election, have both been convicted by American jurors during an election year. So far, the campaigning this year has been as much about events and rallies as it has been about courtroom proceedings.
