Sunak Resigns as Prime Minister Amid Landslide Defeat to Labour

Rishi Sunak has left the prime minister’s residence and headed to Buckingham Palace to offer his resignation to King Charles III. Earlier in the morning, Sunak acknowledged his defeat as vote counts aligned with exit polls predicting a significant victory for the Labour Party over his Conservative Party.

In his final speech outside 10 Downing Street, Sunak remarked, “This is a difficult day, but I leave this job honored to have been prime minister of the best country in the world,” emphasising his dedication to the role.

Following Sunak’s resignation, Labour leader Keir Starmer will visit the palace to receive the king’s consent to form a new government. After the traditional ‘kissing of hands’ ceremony, Starmer will proceed to the prime minister’s official residence, where he is expected to address the nation.
