Russian warships to arrive in Havana

Four Russian warships will arrive in Havana next week, including a nuclear-powered submarine. Cuban officials cited the “historically friendly relations” between the two countries while tensions escalate over Western support for Ukraine against Russia in the war.

Cuba’s foreign ministry said in a news release that the ships will be in the capital between, 12th and 17th June, highlighting that none of them will carry any nuclear weapons. They have assured that their presence would not “represent a threat to the region.”

The announcement comes just a day after American officials said that Washington was tracking Russian warships and aircraft bound for the Caribbean for a military exercise. The exercise would be part of a larger Russian response to America’s support for Ukraine, they said.

Their presence, US officials added, was notable but not concerning. However, it takes place just as Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that Moscow take “asymmetrical steps” in other parts of the world in response to US President Joe Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to use American weapons to strike Russia to protect Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine.

The four ships, according to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, are the frigate “Gorshkov,” the nuclear-powered submarine “Kazan,” the fleet oil tanker “Pashin” and the salvage tug “Nikolai Chiker.”

21 salvos will be fired from one of the ships as a salute to Cuba upon their arrival at the port in Havana. This will be reciprocated by an artillery battery from Cuba’s Revolutionary Armed Forces, according to the Foreign Ministry.
