Things to do in London at Christmas

As the Christmas season approaches, here are a few things to do to get into the spirit this winter.

Throughout London, Christmas lights are being turned on and will remain well after the new year. Oxford Street and Regents Street are among the best known but head over to Carnaby or Kew and you will see equally breathtaking sights this Christmas.

Speaking of Kew, the world famous botanical garden is brimming with seasonal cheer including twinkling lights and seasonal sounds through the air. Discover glittering tunnels of light, dancing lakeside reflections and trees drenched in jewel-like colour.

Skating rinks are popping up all over the capital, including Hyde Park’s famous Winter Wonderland. The annual event is back with music, rides, and food to give you a magical Christmas. Journey through the nine realms of Norse mythology in the immersive Ice Kingdom, an exploration of a mythical frozen world, crafted by expert sculptors using over 500 tonnes of ice and snow. Winter Wonderland will go on until New Year’s Day and you won’t want to miss out on it.

And finally, take the Thames Clipper (or DLR) to Greenwich. Festive lights, amazing views and tales of the high seas: a trip to Greenwich this winter wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Cutty Sark. The ship’s rigging will once again be lit up with twinkling lights in the shape of a Christmas tree, while on board visitors will be able to take part in a range of festive activities. Explore the wonders of the night sky and look through the telescopes of the Royal Observatory at this classic museum late event. The night begins with a live planetarium show, introducing you to the wonders of the night sky. Then, after sunset and weather permitting, observatory astronomers will guide you across the night sky with both modern-day telescopes and our 130-year-old instrument: the Great Equatorial Telescope.

And that’s all just the tip of the iceberg. London has so much to offer to give you a merry Christmas.
