Wandsworth “takes positive action” on e-bike parking

Wandsworth Council is installing parking bays for e-bikes to support responsible active travel across the borough. The scheme will ensure residents benefit from the low-carbon convenience and flexibility of travel by e-bike, whilst ensuring parking is properly managed in busy borough town centres. A total of 111 parking bays are being installed from Thursday, 20th June, following extensive local consultations. It is anticipated that installation will take a period of around four weeks as work takes place across the borough.

Riders will be expected to use these parking bays wherever possible. Once all the bays have been installed, parking will be prohibited on pavements in busy town centre locations. Responsible ‘free-floating’ parking will still be permitted away from these hotspots and in quieter parts of the borough. The locations of the new town centre parking bays include Clapham Junction, Tooting Broadway, Tooting Bec, Wandsworth Town, Balham and Putney.

“We support the use of e-bikes as they offer a convenient travel option for residents and visitors,” David Tidley, Head of Transport Strategy at Wandsworth, said. “They’re a clean and sustainable way of getting around and help to improve local air quality. We are really pleased that there have already been more than a million journeys made by e-bike in Wandsworth.

“But residents will know that there have been some challenges, with a small minority of riders abandoning bikes without any thought for pedestrians and local communities.

“These new bays will help riders to park in fixed town-centre locations and encourage considerate parking.”

A further programme of e-bike parking bays will follow later this year.

Members of the public should continue to report any poorly-parked or abandoned e-bikes directly to operators.
